The Brief:
Denise Katrina Matthews became better known as Vanity after hooking up with Prince and being installed as the lead character in his girl group Vanity 6. Vanity was around long enough for one album to be recorded and moved on to a solo career after that. She inked a recording deal with Motown records and her first LP, ‘Wild Animal’, hit the shelves in 1984. The first single from that LP was “Pretty Mess” a song that Vanity wrote the lyrics and the melody for. It was her first entry on the Hot 100 as a solo artist and her first Top 20 R&B chart hit.

Very much appreciated! Thank you!
Where do u get ‘em from Mr!
u seem 2 have a knack for stuff i used 2 have
‘on vinyl’ now sadly sold or lost
i know i couldn’t twist your arm over Teena Marie
but you Anything by David Bowie?
Outside of the ‘Let’s Dance’ LP, I never was much into Bowie either, other than the hits on the radio. I don’t recall there being much in the way of notable 12 inchers from the ‘Let’s Dance’ LP were there? I think the “Let’s Dance” 12″ was just the album cut, right? I really loved the songs “Ashes To Ashes” and”Fashion” but, don’t think there were any extended mixes or remixes for those? Any way, sorry, no Bowie in the collection either.
Thanks Richie, makes my day!
Correct about Bowie, A-Side speaking. All of the A-Side 12″ releases from the Let’s Dance album are just duplicates of the LP versions. However, the B-Side of “Without You” included a marvelous mix of “Shake It”. Starting with his next album, “Tonight”, Bowie became remix/club savvy and most of the album’s tracks were issued as either A-Side or B-Side 12″ remixes. From that point forward 99% of his albums contained a single that was mixed for club consumption. BTW: just about everything that was issued on EMI 12″ from Bowie is available digitally through iTunes (or better yet, AmazonMP3)…except the mentioned mix of “Shake It”.
Thanks for the info, much appreciated!
‘Can I marry your brain?’ dana
I ‘got into’ mr B through my ‘love’ of Chic, and all things ‘funky’ – i guess
but as my friend above puts it so perfectly Bowie saw that circumventing Rock radio all together via club play was the way ahead
for a while the ‘dance tracks’ i’d hear folk rave over were all by ‘rock bands’
U2 INXS Bowie etc
The Stones The Beach Boys to the likes of Kiss etc all did ‘disco’
and perversely the ‘Vinyl Version’ of DB’s ‘Outside’ is much lusted after (some trax are edited + and it had a nice book)
so much 4 the death of 12 inch vinyl lol
