The A Side:
The Smurf 6:05
The B Side:
I Need Love 5:15
The Brief:
“The Smurf” was a popular dance in the 80s that was popularized in song by numerous R&B and rap artists. Tyrone Brunson’s first single from his 1983 ‘Sticky Situation’ LP capitalizes on the fad with his electro instrumental take on the dance. It would be the highest charting single of his career.
A personal recollection I have of this song is an all in one stereo system that I got for Christmas in 1982. It came from JCPenney and had a turntable, radio and a cassette player/recorder built in to one unit with external speakers. I thought it was the most awesome thing ever built. “The Smurf” is the first song I played on that stereo and I always remember that stereo every time I hear this song. Yeah, most people remember old boyfriends or girlfriends, I remember stereos… LOL.

I remember the first stereo system I got as well, and it the same year as you. But mine isn’t quite the “system” and quite as classy. It was a “non-branded” Walkman I got as a present for doing well in school. The Sony’s and Sanyo’s were out of our financial league.
Still, i was brimming with excitement as it was my first personal audio equipment. My days were then filled with music of my own choice and my own time! Special times indeed!
Yes they were!
Another new one for me! Thanks for the post
You are welcome!
