The Brief:
The Salsoul Orchestra was the house band for recording acts on the fabled Salsoul Records label. In addition to their session work for the various Salsoul acts, they also released albums under their own name over a period spanning from 1975 to 1981. The “orchestra” sometime included as many as 50 members performing, arranging and conducting. Vincent Montana, Jr. was the conductor and the group included most of the original members of Philly International’s MFSB who came to Salsoul after a falling out with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff over money. In 1976 they released the Christmas LP ‘Christmas Jollies’ which went to #76 on the Billboard 200 in 1976 and re-entered the chart in 1977 reaching #48. This “Christmas Medley” promo 12″ is dated 1976 but, records show that it wasn’t actually released until 1982.
