The Brief:
Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Haywood County, Tennessee in 1939. She is an American icon. Her early music career was spent with husband Ike Turner and great success was enjoyed during the 60s and into the 70s. Somewhere along the way, things turned sour for Tina and Ike as Tina suffered physical and mental abuse at his hands. They divorced in 1978. Her music career floundered and never seemed to gain any traction until… Turner’s cover of “Let’s Stay Together” hit No. 6 in the UK and No. 26 on the US Billboard 100 singles chart. The album ‘Private Dancer’ was released in June 1984 and went on to sell five million copies in the US, and a total of 11 million copies worldwide. The album produced 5 Top 40 hits in the US. The final single released from the LP was “Show Some Respect” which was backed with a live cover of Prince’s “Let’s Pretend We’re Married”. Today’s post showcases the 7” and 12” releases of the song.
