The Brief:
The 2 Live Crew’s chart success was growing with each subsequent release. The peak of their popularity came in 1989 with the release of the first album in history to be deemed legally obscene. The album was “As Nasty As They Wanna Be” which was ruled by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida to be legally obscene, later overturned by the Eleventh Circuit. The album went Top 30 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and spawned the single “Me So Horny” which became the group’s first Top 40 hit. The song samples “Firecracker” by Mass Production, lines from the Richard Pryor film Which Way Is Up? and the Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket.

Speaking of Mass Production….was there ever a 12 inch release of their classic “Firecracker”?
There was a promo 12″ of Firecracker that is timed at 6:30. The album version is listed as 6:13. I don’t have either on vinyl so, not sure if the 12″ version is remixed or if the time listings are just “misprinted”.
Since you’re digging thru the 80′s ass thumpers, please tell me at some point you’ll find LET THE RYTHM PUMP (Doug Lazy) or LET THERE BE HOUSE (Deskee) somewhere in that magic crate of yours. I immediately thought of those since your 2 LIVE marathon just took me right back to the club that was playing these back then.
Anyhow- thanx as usual: I bought a whole set of 2LCs before I understood the evils of protected Itunes files so I’ve been stuck with them on one computer (ie they’re basically useless). This was a most welcome theme this week! Props, Man!
I feel like I am constantly disappointing people when I have to tell them I don’t have the records they are requesting. In this case, not only do I not have those records, I’m not even familiar with the songs. Glad that you are enjoying the 2 Live postings…
Holy crap! This is a trip back to high school. Thanks for the memories, Rich.
my pleasure shelf, enjoy…
Nasty And Lovin’ It!
I remember having to buy more 12″s than usual when I bought this dirty single. I’m sure the record seller don’t even care, but you just feel as guilty as you did when you went into a drug store and got your first condom. LOL!
even though it was a cleaned up version, it’s still hard for me to believe this got radio airplay
nasty and great!! This was the first thing you hear the 2 live crew beyond the now distant 1989 … great post thanks
you’re welcome Jose
HA! Never a disappointment Man! Always appreciate what yer doing:-) Those were more clubby/House rap hybrids that decided to chain themselves to this trip down memory lane you kicked off (again).
I echo what Ric said. I recall that most big record stores would not display the album you had to ask for it. Which only made it seem even more dangerous. I grew up in SC and it felt like a giant middle finger to those that Parental discretion stickers. Now it seems like a tempest in a teacup. I have to admit though that I never dug 2 Live crew all that much except for the Megamixes, those were awesome.
You were pretty much in the same area as me SC=GA. Major Bible Belt states and yeah, was a little intimidating trying to buy such “obscene” material at that time.
Thanks Richie. Now I can find out what the fuss was all about.
