The Brief:
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote “Don’t Make Me Over” for Dionne Warwick. The song was released as the b-side to Dionne’s first single that was released in 1962. Despite that, the song caught on and entered the Billboard charts in December 1962 where it would eventually rise to #21 pop and #5 R&B. It was the first of more than 56 singles that Dionne placed on the Billboard Hot 100 during her career.
In 1989 Sybil Lynch teamed up with producers James Bratton and Dolores Drewry to record a cover of the tune. Sybil’s version actually outperformed Dionne’s by charting higher on the both the pop and R&B charts. It also reached #19 on the UK Singles Chart.

Covers seldom trumps the original.
But this one did.
Great post, Richie!
Excellent combination of the Bacharach/David sound with the Soul II Soul beat.
One of my favourites from 1989, and her Walk On By followup also just as amazing!
Thanks Ric
