The Brief:
Krush Groove is a 1985 film based on the early days of Def Jam Recordings and up-and-coming record producer Russell Simmons, portrayed by Blair Underwood in his feature film debut. Russell Simmons was the film’s co-producer and story consultant; he also has a cameo role in the film as a club owner named Crocket. The soundtrack featured various artists performing songs from the movie. The album has never been widely available on CD. The album version of “Holly Rock” by Sheila E. runs a length of 4:57 which differs from the running times of the extended version and single edit available on the 12” promo release. The album peaked at #79 on the Billboard 200 and #14 on the R&B albums chart.

  2. YES! I loved this soundtrack. I remember ordering it from Columbia House or BMG Music Service back in the day. Wore out “Holly Rock” and “Tender Love” (the latter of which was penned by Jam & Lewis).
