The Brief:
This is the first pure rap record I remember buying, it’s been in my collection since it was released in 1983. I first heard the song on WJIZ radio and had to go out and buy it, it was just so good. The single was originally just a one-off deal but, the success of the record prompted Run-D.M.C. to go into the studio and record a complete LP. That self-titled LP was released in 1984 and achieved Gold status in sales and reached #14 on the Hot Black Albums chart.

Yo Yo Yo!
MC Richie is in da Rap Phase now, eh?
You never know when you’ll get your second wind. For a minor hit like this in 1983, it is indeed surprising that it became the monster smash fifteen years later in the UK. Stopping Spice Girls’ run of six consecutive number one, and in sales term it that year it was only second to the Titanic that is *gag* My Heart Will Go On.
only in the UK could a song become a smash hit 15 years later. I really admire that
WOW! This brings back some sweet memories. I’ll have to go through my records and see which ones are icons of my youth
Oh Sheila – Ready for the world
Borderline – Madonna
Diamonds – Herb Alpert
Also thanks for those alexander O’Neal 12inches!!
you are most welcome
Wow…this was truly a landmark single for hip hop and music in general. Of course it was a derivative of the “Planet Rock” beat craze of the early 80′s but I remember rocking this all summer long at block parties back in the day. Thanks for another excellent throwback!
Thanks Richie. I didn’t have this one as it wasn’t very popular in Australia until the remix by Jason Nevins.
I just recently acquired a 10″ single of the Nevins remixes. One day it will appear here on the blog… one day
This is actually pretty cool. I remember hearing the Jason Nevins remix on a retro show a few months back, and couldn’t help wondering why it had such an “80′s rap” sound. Didn’t fit the 90′s gangsta rap so much.
Thank you so much for having uploaded this! Really awesome record right here. Also, you wouldn’t happen to have “It’s Tricky” as well would you? I heard it in a club before and it’s pretty catchy.
I do have that one, haven’t recorded it yet but it is on the to do list. Got a 10″ with the Jason Nevins mix of this one to do also.
