The Brief:
The Gap Band released “Early in the Morning” as a single in 1982 and it went on to become their biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 24 while also topping Billboard’s R&B chart for three weeks. In 1988, Robert Palmer covered the song for his ‘Heavy Nova’ LP and released it as the second single from the album following up “Simply Irresistible”. Palmer managed to get the song into the Top 20. The 12” extended version was mixed by Eric “E.T.” Thorngren.

Mr Palmer is one cool dude in my books, so effortless in crossing genres….New Wave, Rock, Soul, Jazz, Funk, Blues…and his ability to make other people’s songs his own!

One gone too soon. Saw him a few years before he passed when Power Station reformed. He had a cold and should have been in bed but he stayed, he sang and gave a great performance. Thank you for this one.
