The Brief:
Denise Lorraine Davis is known by her stage name Rainy Davis. At the request of Amir Bayyan, (personal friend of the Jacksons), Rainy Davis wrote “Sweetheart” with producer Pete Warner for Janet Jackson. When the demo was finished all the songs for Janet’s ‘Control’ album, had been chosen. Amir Bayyan, Christine Bayyan and Chris Lord Alge suggested to Davis that she release the song herself, and as a result it became a hit on R&B radio. The single’s success resulted in a record deal with Columbia Records and the album ‘Sweetheart’ was released in 1987. One of the singles from that album was Rainy’s cover of Prince’s song “Still Waiting”.
The song made its debut on Billboard’s Hot Black Singles this day in 1987.
