The instrumental version of “God” is also known as the “Love Theme from Purple Rain”. The “Long Version” of “Purple Rain” as listed on the sleeve is simply the album version from the soundtrack LP/CD. “God (Vocal)” was released on CD as part of “The Hits/B-Sides” collection.

Not exactly my favourite Prince single, but I was truly shocked when this didn’t make it to #1. After all, it was such a high debut, on the back of 2 #1s singles and from an album that was still riding atop the Billboard 200.
Even though the album spent 24 weeks on top, the remaining singles also didn’t perform quite as well, peak position wise, and longevity wise.

ya know, I’m not particularly fond of “Purple Rain”, the song, myself. I know that is almost heresy to say around Prince fans but, it just drags on too long for me. I actually prefer the 7″ edit. but, I didn’t buy this 12″ for that, I got it for the God instrumental, I freaking love that track!

        I agree totally!
Purple Rain is one song you can only have in the 7″ dose…the full length one is over-indulgent for me. It ended up as a jam that goes on and on and forever…heh heh

    THIS IS PRINCE’S FRIDAY I’M IN LOVE…

Every artist/band has a top40 song the ‘masses’ associate them with. For THE CURE it’s Friday I’m in love. For DURAN DURAN it’s either Hungry Like the Wolf or The Reflex. New Order’s is arguably Bizzare Love Triangle or True Faith. This is Prince’s.

Yes, the 7″ is the more tolerable. THX!

I passed this one up in the late 80′s and i never saw it again. :(
    Thanks :D

The instrumental version of God got a bit of airplay here in Detroit back in the day, and I’ve never understood why this great guitar track was never issued in the U.S.

That said, The short version of Purple Rain? Without the guitar solo that song is pointless.

I know, I know, I know it’s heresy to say I’d rather hear the edited version. I know, I’m a bad Prince fan for saying it. But, I get bored with the full length version after about 4 minutes. I hang my head in shame.
