The A Side:
Purple Rain 4:02
The B Side:
God 3:59
The Brief:
The title track from the ‘Purple Rain’ LP was the third single released from the blockbuster album and the first single that failed to reach #1 as it stalled out at #2, top-blocked by Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. By missing the top spot, Prince failed to match the Bee Gees record (at that time) of putting three songs at #1 from an album release, an accomplishment the Bee Gees did twice with ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Spirits Having Flown’. This single was released on purple vinyl in a screen printed plastic picture sleeve. The US single release was edited down from the LP running time of 8:45 to a radio friendly 4:02. This edit version has never been available on an official CD release.

Some musical rain from The Purple One!
Back in the good ole mid-80s, it’s great if you can score a #1 single from an album, amazing if you can do two, and almost unheard of when you do three. So Wham! was the one to equal the Bee Gees’ record then in 1985?
These days, with itunes and all, artists can fart a string of number 1′s!!! One rhymes with Banana, the other with Ferry. Really de-sensitize the awesomeness of scoring a #1 single.
well, the record got eclipsed by Michael Jackson in 1987 when ‘Bad’ put 5 singles at #1 on the Hot 100. Katy Perry matched that with her 2010 release ‘Teenage Dream’ but, as you said above, I don’t put a whole lot of stock in her accomplishment…
Ahhh, the days. I used to have this 45, plus “True Blue” from Madonna on blue vinyl, and a 45 called “We Called Him E.T.” on red vinyl hanging on my wall over my record player. As I keep recording my vinyl to LP (I’m on ELO right now, then EVITA cast recordings), I plan to skip the purple vinyl, since I have them on black vinyl as well. Not sure about the “1999: The New Master” yet. Might play it once to get the rip. I don’t know that I’ve ever played it at all.
I have that “True Blue” 45 in “production” for posting on the blog at some point. Can’t say as I have ever heard of “We Called Him ET”. “1999: The New Master” ? oh dear
Listen, the 1999 12″ was purely a collector thing. Don’t judge me! LOL
Who am I to judge? I bought the furshlugginer thing too. It’s in my collection at home. I cannot cast aspersions upon you my friend.
Oh, and get this: While I’m in the midst of recording all my Purple Rain stuff, I have a lot of radio 12″ singles. White label on one side (the back), and a plain purple cover on the front w/ the name of the song. I have one for “Purple Rain”, the LP version b/w the edit. It’s purple! Radio station promo only, not for sale, blah blah. I was totally surprised when I pulled it out. hahaha
Nice find, nice record….
gracias por compartir este 7” ¡¡¡¡ great !!!!!
de nada
I cued for half an hour in the rain to watch this the day it came to Glasgow
I still remember ‘Jonathon King’ on tv playing a clip of when doves cry
that was different to the ‘TOTP’s’ version = no movie scenes
