The Brief:
I bought this 12” because of Paul Hardcastle’s involvement. “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag” was an UK indie hit for the group Pigbag in 1981. In 1985, Paul Hardcastle produced The Silent Underdog’s version of the song for this Profile Records 12”. For all I know, The Silent Underdog is Paul Hardcastle? It certainly sounds like his style of music at that time. I always listened to the A side, was never fond of Pigbag’s version on the B side. Give it a listen and tell me your thoughts…

I’m with you, never liked the original. But I’d never heard this later version (probably skipped it on name recognition), does have a total Hardcastle sound.

I have this exact 12″, Richie! Mine was in a red single sleeve though…
Pigbag did cross over to the mainstream charts in 1982 and zoomed all the way to #3!!!
Paul Hardcastle’s version hit #73 in 1985.
There was a rave cover released by Sorted in 1992 (that didn’t chart).
And also the Paul Oakenfold project Perfecto Allstarz who took the song back into the UK Top 10 in 1995 as Reach Up (Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag).
Seems like you can’t keep a “good’ song down. LOL!

Great Paul Hardcastle with his version for “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag” in my case Pimero hear this and then Pigbag!! Overall the sound is immediately reminded that Hardcastle album of 1985 with” 19”,” King Tut and other … here I opposite happens with the post of tom jones YSU hardcastle I prefer electro funk sound.
