Great rip! Just wondering why you take the time to rip 12″ vinyl when the same mixes are on the CD Maxi? http://www.discogs.com/Oakenfold-Starry-Eyed-Surprise/release/52517

Well, Fred, I only own the vinyl copy, the vinyl and CD maxi are both out of print at this point. I’ve mentioned this on the site before but, let me make this point again. I am in the process of converting all my vinyl to digital for my use primarily. An offshoot of that is this blog, where I decided to share my work with others that may be interested. I’m obviously not doing this to make money, I spend way more money and time maintaining this site than I get in return from it. That’s not a complaint, just a fact. Whether I continue to maintain this blog or not, I still intend to complete my project of digitizing my vinyl collection. So, it’s really not a question of why am I spending my time converting something that is available on CD. I am doing it because I want a digital library in my home of my vinyl collection that is easily accessible and portable. If you see something that is posted on this blog that you have on CD or can obtain on CD, then by all means, don’t download it or go get yourself the CD. As I have also said before, I do not pretend that my vinyl rips are good enough to be considered better than owning an original CD pressed from master tapes. Thank you for visiting the blog and please continue to enjoy any of my rips that you would like to have.

Hi again! I meant no disrespect or ridicule…I was just wondering…and head read your similar comments earlier elsewhere on the site…but nothing concrete about my question. :) I am in the same boat as you…an ex-dj with thousands of 12″ singles and thousands of cds/cd maxis. I began my 12″-to-digital conversion process in the mid 90s. I started with the ultra rare stuff such as 12″s that had 8-14 mixes. As the years passed and the internet grew (ebay, Amazon, non-USA cd sites), I found more and more original cd maxis, re-issues, compilations, and in the past 5-10 years, tons of re-releases of albums with many 12″ mixes. Prince is a classic example of an artist that would only release 1 remix per song…and his Hits double cd has all the mixes.

Therefore, I usually begin scouring the internet first for cd versions of the 12″ mixes…I have found a very surprising percentage of 80s and 90s mixes on cd format…and of course there are times that some paticular mixes are missing or more rarely, none exist on cd format. So I just convert the mixes that I need to save time.

I and everyone here greatly appreciate your work…that is a definite! I just didn’t know if you knew how many mixes were truly on cd and thus could cut down some of your efforts.

Anyway, I extremely love your work and feel free to reach out to my via email if you have questions or help.

        -Fred

The answer is, I am not looking to cut down on my efforts. I enjoy working with these records, it’s fun, I like it, I enjoy it and I enjoy the opportunity it has given me to “meet” other like minded people around the world. This isn’t a job, it’s a passion. :)

P.S.: There is no Prince Hits release that has all his 12″ mixes. ‘The Hits/The B-Sides’ are all single edits with an exception or two that are album cuts. ‘Ultimate Prince’ has some 12″ mixes that had never been on CD but, certainly not all of his 12″ mixes. My research has turned up 33 Prince 12″ mixes or 7″ edits released on vinyl that have never been released on an official CD.
