Early in her career, Nona Hendryx was one of a three part nucleus that formed a singing group called The Ordettes. The other two were Sarah Dash and Patricia Holte (who later changed her name to Patti LaBelle). The Ordettes evolved into the Bluebelles which evolved into Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles which evolved into LaBelle. In 1977 LaBelle dissolved and Nona embarked on a solo career. 1987 marked the release of her fifth solo album, ‘Female Trouble’. Prince and Peter Gabriel contributed songs to the LP and Nona also enlisted Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to write and produce some tracks. “Why Should I Cry” is one of the Jam & Lewis tracks and it proved to be Nona’s most commercially successful single of her career. The track “Funkyland”, which was co-produced and co-written by Nona and Dan Hartman, is a bonus track not available on the ‘Female Trouble’ LP.
