The Brief:
Mavis Staples began her singing career as the lead vocalist for her family group, the Staple Singers, in the 60s. The band enjoyed hits in the 70s such as “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself”. In the 80s she worked with Prince on two albums bearing her name. “Jaguar” is a song written by Prince from the first of those two albums.
In a 2011 interview Mavis said, “Ain’t no stopping me, I will sing,” she said. “You know, you’d have to come and scoop me off the stage. I’m gonna sing till I die. I will sing until I die. No need stopping.”
Let’s hope and pray that time doesn’t come for many, many more years!

Never heard this before but is very keen to do so. Thanks Richie!
I wonder if it’s a dirty song….
you’re welcome Ric, it’s not on the dirty side, quite a good tune though
Thanks.
you’re welcome Sean
Just got around to listening to this. Very nice! Thanks for exposing me to Mavis/Prince work outside of Melody Cool.
I’ve never been able to make myself listen closely enough to figure out what the difference is in these two versions. One is usually labelled “12″ Version” and the other “Ferocious”
is it just me or do they sound exactly the same? or am I so non-plussed that I completely zone out when it’s time to compare?
heh, good question, I must admit I’ve never really taken time to compare either
re Errant’s comments between the similarities – I don’t hear any similarities either. Plus the Radio Edit sounds more like a remix and nothing like an edit of the album version. Still, great to hear the songs
I meant the differences, not similarities. Meaning I don’t hear any difference between the extended mix on the A and B side and the edit versions on the A and B side. Did they mistakenly repress the same tracks on both sides?
