The A Side:
Shattered Dreams (12″ Version) 5:13
The Brief:
That damned Johnny! Hatin’ on jazz like that. Who does he think he is?
Johnny Hates Jazz were Clark Datchler, Mike Nocito and Calvin Hayes. And, reportedly the band’s name referenced Nocito’s brother-in-law Johnny, who really hated jazz. “Shattered Dreams” reached the #5 spot on the UK singles chart in May of 1987 but, wasn’t released as a single in the US until early 1988. In addition to its #2 ranking on the Hot 100, the song reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

And the hits keep comin’!
Strangely, the 12″ of this was left out of the first pressing of their debut album while including the 12″s for subsequent singles, so thanks for your rip, Richie!
Johnny Hates Jazz and Wet Wet Wet broke into the UK scene around the same time and while the Wets went on to become massive in the UK, Johnny Hates Jazz surprisingly had the crossover hits.
Shattered Dreams is actually a song about a divorce. It’s a real life account based on Clark’s friend and took him about a month to write. The things the couple had planned for the future are all gone, and what’s left now are “shattered dreams”. Clark thought that was a good title for the song, and used it.
