Many thanks for this post. It’s my favourite track from her debut album and I’ve been looking for the a good copy of the extended remix for ages. Thanks for all the other great posts you put up as well.

  2. Marc from Nova Scotia says:

LOVE this Prince-like funky gem! Always thought it was criminally underrated back in the day, and that extended remix is EPIC.

Keep up the awesome work – I love your site’s mix of classic tunes and more obscure ditties; it makes for a more well-rounded collection. :-)

  3. Brad says:

Great Jody Watley post! I hope you will post all of her 80′s 12″ mixes. They are all classics, and deserve to be heard.

  4. ANDREW says:

    Huge thanks mr FWV !
    Loved this one as well
Whilst not as POP – if I read anymore about it being a ‘Black-er’ Single !
And anything even vaguely Purple, (or Peach n’ Black etc) certainly was thought better of by the critics

An epic 8:39 ride into the musical mind of Andre Cymone…prime mpls sound from one of the originators!

With Jody doing her best Grace Jones verses, and slightly less robotic poppy choruses.

MPLS meets Grace Jones meets Kraftwork meets New Wave….Love it!!!

    Loving Jody week here

Forgot about all that Art of Noise stuff near the end too….make’s it very mixable in that direction.

      “Where are my keys?” Indeed…

Andre who? ;) This is my favorite Jody song of all time and this nearly 9 minute workout is pure joy to these tired old ears.

        • oldDJ says:

100% agree. Just listened to it 3x in a row.

As old Mr. Nelson used to say:

…Negros from Brooklyn play the bass pretty good, but the ones from Minneapolis play it like it oughta should…

After the success of Looking For A New Love, I immediately bought the Jody Watley album when it was released and thought it to be a great pop/dance/r&b album (and courageously with not a ballad in sight!!!)
While I thought Still A Thrill was a hot jam, I was shocked that it was the next single. I knew pop radio wouldn’t be ready for it.
From a commercial point, I’d have moved up the next three releases and put Still A Thrill as the last single to be released. I think she would’ve charted better with those singles (a definite Top 3 with Don’t You Want Me, a likely Top 5 with Some Kind Of Lover and at least another Top 40 hit with Most Of All) as there won’t be any momentum lost.
Having said that, this 12″ remix is simply out of this world! And thanks for replacing my worn out vinyl with your rip, Richie!
