    Thanks for your rip, Richie!
It was 3 frustrating weeks at #2 on the Hot 100 for Jody (2 weeks blocked by Cutting Crew and 1 week by U2).
Such a crowd during those few competitive weeks. Sign O The Times only managed #3 and La Isla Bonita only #4 :-( Goes to show the quality of music back then.
I remember the uproar when Jody was nominated for the Best New Artist. There had already been an outcry the previous year when Whitney Houston was not included in that same category. The reason given then was that Whitney had charted in the Hot 100 in 1984 with Teddy Pendergrass for Hold Me. So she wasn’t exactly a new artist when her debut album was released.
So was it double standard with Jody? I’m not so sure, while Jody Watley never appeared in the Hot 100 as a solo artist, she did release a couple of solo singles before Looking For A New Love…

      hi ric,

I can still remember the 2 idiot dj’s on Englands BBC Radio asking Jody about Shalamars demise by saying, ”Let’s get the truth, Straight from the horses mouth !”

”The WHAT !” she says and all kinda downhill from there on……

The singles referred to were credited as simply ‘Jody’, Where The Boys Are & Girls Night Out
They both stiffed, so thinking caps back on and a ‘cod Janet Jackson-sound alike’ was how certain ‘British critics’ called this effort
Oh !, and the B-side to both singles was ‘My House-4 Free’

Whitney’s failing was also a Jermaine Jackson Duet from ‘B4′ some said
Tho how far you wanna go back ?
She was on the Paul Jabara & Friends album
Ms.Watley qualified cos that year she was Technically She WAS a New Artist
aaaaand quiet at the back there ! With competion like Terence Trent (one album then down the crapper) D’arby
She walked it, A lot of folk thought she deserved having put ‘the time in’ slogging away ala Shalamar n’ getting treated as 2nd best to mr.Curly Perm (and odious creep) Howard Hewett [Yes! I've met him]

      • ric says:

Howard Hewett, Mr Ego himself. I’ve remember reading how he thought himself to be the driving force of Shalamar and often treated Jody and Jeffrey as second class citizens. I’m glad Jody ended up with a WAY more successful solo career than he ever did…or did he ever have one? LOL!

Every time I see this 12″, I have a good chuckle at how lopsided it is. One track on the A and the remaining four on the B. Great post, btw. ;)

    great rip, thanks a lot

  6. NouveauDance says:

The comments on this one are almost as interesting as the music itself… almost!

Thanks for the great Jody rips Richie :)

  7. rocksteady says:

Oh, that was meant for NoovoDance, but hello anyways ;)

  8. Elcio Rossi says:

This sound is fantastic, I danced a lot at the time … thanks for sharing. “Hasta la vista Baby!”
