Side 1:
Jingle Bell Rock (From Daryl) 2:09
Side A:
Jingle Bell Rock (From John) 2:09
The Brief:
“Jingle Bell Rock” was originally written by Joseph Carleton Beal and James Ross Boothe. The song was first released by Bobby Helms in 1957 only two days before Christmas. Despite the close proximity to the holiday, the song reached #6 on the Hot 100 that season and charted several other years after that as a re-issue and in some cases Helms re-recorded the song. In 1983, Hall and Oates recorded the song for a special Christmas single release. Two versions were recorded, one featuring Daryl on lead vocals and one featuring John. This promo 12″ lists Daryl’s version as being on Side 1 and John’s version on Side A.
Even more timeless than this single is the video Hall & Oates sent to MTV for the song. G.E. Smith was the guitar-playing Grandma and Tom “T-Bone” Wolk played Grandpa while the other band members joined in on the wonderfully goofy Christmas video. Have a look…

What a nice share, definitely yours and “Burning..” are my favorites blogs, the fact that you provide 12″ that hardly has seen the light of day since their original Vinyl issue is priceless and I thank you for that (I know that they were available a japanese imports). I don’t remember how I run into your blog but it has made this extended unemployed period bearable. In music. Ricki
I can relate to your experience, my son has been job seeking for over 7 months now. It’s my hope that something opens up for you soon. Thank you for your kind words about my humble little blog.
Another great share… and my thanks once again. I’ve had the 7″ promo of this single since its release but didn’t know there was a 12″ as well. The 7″ is on the regular black RCA label but has “NOT FOR SALE” right under the catalog number. Mine is RCA JB-14259, on green vinyl with a pic sleeve.
I think the commercial releases on 45 were green vinyl, too weren’t they? Or was this single promo only?
R.I.P. T-Bone.
