The Brief:
In 1986, General Kane underwent a slight name change turning Caine into Kane. The band had just inked a recording contract with Motown Records and released their first album for the label, ‘In Full Chill’, in 1986. The primary force behind General Kane was Mitch McDowell. In an interview, McDowell stated that the song “Crack Killed Applejack” is about Celtics star Len Bias, who died of a cocaine overdose. The song was quite controversial in its day and was banned from radio play in some areas. McDowell opened a bail bond business after his music career ended. Tragically, in January of 1992, Mitch and his teen-age nephew were shot to death during a robbery at their bail bond business. McDowell, 37, and Akili John Davis, 18, were found dead by a homeless man looking for a place to sleep. Investigators said the business had been ransacked and the safe was empty.
