The Brief:
The hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince were first signed to a record label by Paul Oakenfold in 1985. Oakenfold, now a well-known recording artist himself, was working as an A&R man for Champion Records when Hip-Hop was becoming a driving force in the music world. Oakenfold also signed Salt-n-Pepa and later worked as the promoter and British agent for the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C. The single “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” was the first charting hit for DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. The track sampled the theme song from I Dream of Jeannie and charted on the Hot 100 over two years after it hit the Hot Black Singles chart due to the popularity the duo were enjoying at that time in their career.

…and that’s why I’m Gay! LOL!
I remember back in the 80s, when rap is associated with Gangsta and Hardcore, then comes DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince with their fun positive and “lightweight” rap. You can imagine Salt N Pepa giving the duo a knockout in the boxing ring!
But I don’t like my rap too aggressive and heavy, so theirs was quite the blend for me.
Happy Monday, Richie!
this week should be another week of rap songs that you forgot how much you liked back in the day, more in the light, humorous and danceable vein
Lots of good memories with this track.
Thanks!
Out of curiosity, any chance we can get cd versions of your material?
Vinyl is fun, but lets face it, the quality will never be as sharp and artifact free as a digital copy.
You’re welcome Rebecca, however, this is Fun With Vinyl not Fun With Polycarbonate so, it really does not fit the purpose of this blog. However, there are links in each post to Amazon.com where you can purchase official CD or MP3 versions from the artists and… it also helps support this blog as each purchase from those links generates a referral fee back to FWV. Hope that helps.
If a vinyl rip is done properly, and with no clicks or pops, they are better than CD rips. Especially the remastered ones with those “brickwalling”.
No doubt. Brickwalling is ruining music. We should be really thankful that folks like DJ Richie are preserving these vinyl rips for all.
Sounds great!
thanks Mike
Thanks… and let’s not mention what WOMEN are.
Thanks Richie. Didn’t have this one.
