You hear antecedents to Run DMC, electro, Paul Hardcastle, later Grace Jones….interesting.

However, I don’t understand their claim to be the first to rap on record.

    1) Rapper’s Delight came out in late 1979
    2) Jamaican toasters were doing it way before that

Regardless, very interesting record…thanks for putting it up.

As I didn’t find a lot of info online about these guys, my assumption is that the claim wasn’t based on this record. Now, what the claim is based on, I don’t know, perhaps there is a reader here with more intimate knowledge of the early hip-hop scene than I have.

Fatback – King Tim III (Personality Jock). Also from 1979 but before Rapper’s Delight.

    From Wikipedia:
King Tim III (Personality Jock)” is a 1979 song by the Fatback Band from the disco album XII. Released on March 25, 1979, a few months before “Rapper’s Delight” (which is widely regarded as the first commercially released hip hop song), this song is often cited as the beginning of recorded hip hop. The title refers to vocalist Tim Washington.

Before I comment, I just want to say thank you for all the vinyl post. When I received my copy of Divine Sounds – What People Do For Money 12″ we played the sh*t out of it. Definitely wasn’t the first rap song, but a very influential one for that time period.
