The Brief:
In the fall of 1985, I started attending college at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. I chose GA State because of their Commercial Music degree program. During my first quarter there, I took an internship with the Atlanta Songwriters Association. While there, one of the guys I interned for got me a part-time job with Tom Gray. Tom was in the process of converting an old building into a recording studio in the Little 5 Points area. Well, I actually wound up working with the contractor doing the renovations and not really with Tom. Needless to say, I soon left there and moved on. But, every time I hear this song, I think back to that.
What does all that have to do with this song, you might ask? Well, Tom Gray wrote “Money Changes Everything” as lead member of the band, The Brains whose self-titled debut album in 1980 included this song. Cyndi Lauper chose to cover it on her 1983 album ‘She’s So Unusual’ and it was released as a single in July of 1984. This is the Japanese 12″ containing a live extended version and a shorter edit of the extended version.
