He had enjoyed minor success over the years with several charting hits but, with the release of ‘Suddenly”, Billy began enjoying great sales and airplay success, garnering #1 spots all over the world with the singles “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)”, “Loverboy” and “Suddenly”. He earned a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and performed at Live Aid in 1985. “Loverboy” was the second single from ‘Suddenly’ and it was the Highest Debut song of the week when it entered the Billboard Hot 100 on December 1, 1984.

Always preferred Loverboy to Caribbean Queen. Thanks!
Though both are great songs, I also preferred this over “Carribean Queen”.
It was nice to Billy’s “Loverboy” and Teena Marie’s “Lovergirl” charting together. For the week ending March 9, 1985, Billy was on top of Teena, as his “Loverboy” was at #11 and her “Lovergirl” was at #12.
I’m looking forward to hearing the Dub Mix once again. Thanks for posting this one!
surprised to see it only hit #20 on the Soul charts, perhaps the song was too “rock” for R&B radios then…
Mutt Lange in the house!
Thanks for your rip, Richie!
Billy Ocean…..I haven’t heard his stuff for years. This is a most welcome post.
Love it.
awwww yeeeeah! Love this one! I can’t wait to hear it. Thanks a lot, Richie 8)
i so knew this was gonna be huuuuuuge that I waited till initial copies were very low and the 12” single i bought of this Song was a later copy. It had a song called ‘Nights’ (Feel Like Gettin’ Down) as a featured track on the B-side . Far more ‘funky’, though i still love this ‘choon’!!!!!
